Refractive Cataract Surgery

Refractive Cataract Surgery is an advanced method of cataract care that is designed to give patients the clearest, broadest range of vision (with little or no dependence on prescription eyewear) using Multifocal ,Toric Intraocular Lens Implants (IOLs) and leading edge surgical techniques, such as Limbal Relaxing Incisions using a precision diamond blade or a femtosecond laser.

Refractive Cataract Surgery also involves the use of exciting new diagnostics which gives our doctors the ability to make real-time lens calculations and measurements during cataract surgery and helps to ensure our Refractive Cataract patients achieve the best possible outcomes.

What Is A Cataract?

A cataract is simply a progressive clouding of the eyes’ natural lens that interferes with light passing through to the retina. Because it happens so gradually – and usually over a long period of time – many people do not notice a significant change in their vision until vision loss has occurred.

Fortunately, clearer vision can be restored in most patients by simply removing the cataract and replacing it with a lens implant. These specially manufactured lenses are about the size of Lincoln’s head on a penny and weigh little more than a single kernel of corn. Exciting advances in lens design now give surgeons and patients options in lens implant technology and power. Different lenses provide patients various ranges of vision following their cataract procedure. It will be important to speak with our doctors as to which of our specialty IOLs will best suite your needs.

Standard Cataract Care

This is the best option for the individual who does not mind wearing glasses after cataract surgery.

Astigmatism Management

Astigmatism treatment is for cataract patients who do not mind wearing reading glasses for near vision. Limbal Relaxing Incisions, or LRI, is the method most commonly used for treating individuals with mild to moderate astigmatism. However, for those with moderate to high degrees of astigmatism, a Toric Intraocular Lens Implant is preferred. This option corrects both the cataracts and the astigmatism, providing improved distance vision image quality.

Enhanced Night Vision

This option is best suited for the individual who still enjoys driving at night but who does not mind wearing reading glasses after cataract surgery.

Custom Cataract Care

When our surgeons performs standard cataract surgery using traditional monofocal lens implants, vision can only be restored at a single point of focus. When using our multifocal or accommodating lens implants, we are able to give many patients the opportunity to enjoy a broader, less-restricted range of vision with reduced or no dependence on prescription eyewear.
